RECENT EVENTS:

APRIL 2008 - “Latino Communities: Up In Smoke?”

LCAT has led a Center for Disease Control (CDC) funded initiative entitled “The Latino Community: Up in Smoke?” The project involved choosing four Latino communities from across the United States using several criteria: the prevalence of smoking among Latinos, the growing populations of Latinos in an area and the current tobacco policies and/or programs (or lack thereof) in the localities. Based on these criteria, the Latino communities in the following four areas sites were selected: South Bronx ( Bronx County), New York; Fairfax County, Virginia; Wake County, North Carolina and Fulton County, Georgia.

Once the sites were selected community forums were organized with the purpose of bringing together local organizations in an environment that strengthens current relationships, fosters new ones and promotes change in the Latino community regarding tobacco usage and related matters. The attendees included Latino community service providers, community-based organizations, governmental officials, key stakeholders in tobacco control and all others interested in attending. An outcome of the forums is a continuing network of organizations and individuals armed with a forum-produced action plan to deal with the tobacco issues in their local areas.
